Education Specialists

 
  Math Solutions Education Specialists are a group of accomplished educators who form the core of our Professional Development Team. Each Professional Development Specialist has years of classroom experience as well as experience in providing professional development to school districts throughout the nation. The team provides year-round support to our district partners, working side by side with teachers and administrators in a firm commitment to improve the quality of math education in our schools.

Lisa Bush

Project Manager for the Shell Centre Formative Assessment Lessons

Lisa Bush recently joined the Math Solutions team full time. She is the project manager for the Shell Centre Formative Assessment Lessons project that is funded through a Gates Foundation Grant. The project will support the implementation of the CCSS in districts in Colorado and Louisiana.

Lisa spent 24 years in the Deer Valley Unified School District in Phoenix, Arizona most recently as the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Specialist for Mathematics. She has been deeply involved with curriculum and assessment development for grades kindergarten through high school.

Lisa has taught mathematics in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to calculus. She is also an active member of Arizona's Learning Forward affiliate and has developed and coordinated professional learning community opportunities for both district and teacher leaders across the state.

Patty Clark is the Director of Content Development. In her role, she oversees the development of courses and partnerships and supports Math Solutions consultants in their work to design and provide professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, and teachers across the country. Patty has facilitated partnership projects with Deer Valley Unified School District, Atlanta Public Schools, East Baton Rouge Parish School System, Baltimore County Schools, and Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District, to name a few.

Prior to joining the organization, Patty was a teacher and instructional specialist in Texas, New Mexico, and Virginia. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education, with a focus in math, science, and technology from the University of New Mexico.

Kristi Cohen

Kristi Cohen understands that one size does not fit all when it comes to providing clients with effective and research-based professional development strategies. She strongly believes in providing customized support for district specific needs. Kristi designs and provides professional development for K–8 classroom teachers, math coaches, and administrators across the country.

Kristi began her math teaching career volunteering in her daughter's fourth grade math class. She has been committed to improving math instruction for children in our nation's schools, and she continues to serve children and reach a wider audience through her Math Solutions work.

Kristi holds a bachelor's degree from Ellis College at the New York Institute of Technology.

Renee Everling

Renee Everling designs and provides Math Solutions professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, and classroom teachers across the United States. Renee aims to use her knowledge and experiences to coach teachers to encourage students in becoming active and excited learners.

With over 14 years of experience in public education at J.F. Burns Elementary and Kings Mills Elementary in Kings Mills, Ohio, Renee is able to draw upon her varied resources gathered from classroom instruction. Renee has been a facilitator of numerous professional development workshops including those for Marilyn Burns and High AIMS Consortium.

Renee earned her BS in Elementary Education from Eastern Kentucky University and her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati. She has completed Post- Graduate coursework at the University of Cincinnati, Miami University, College of Mount Saint Joseph, Walsh University, University of Dayton, and Portland State University. She's also been the recipient of a host of awards, the most notable of which is the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Carolyn Felux

Carolyn Felux came to Math Solutions as an Education Specialist in 1984. She has taken on many roles in the organization, from creating and facilitating professional learning experiences for educators to assisting school district leaders with long-term planning for instructional improvement. As Education Director, she provides direction, research, and support to ensure that Math Solutions courses, products, and services are high-quality, relevant, and effective.

Prior to joining Math Solutions, Carolyn taught in elementary and middle schools and was a Mathematics Consultant for the Education Service Center, Region 20, in San Antonio, Texas. She is coeditor of the popular book The Math Coach Field Guide: Charting Your Course and coauthor of Supporting English Language Learners in Math Class: A Multimedia Professional Learning Resource. She lives in San Antonio.

Marji Freeman

Marji Freeman plans, develops the content for, and provides regular, ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers across the country. Marji served on the Math Solutions Professional Development team chosen by the Phil Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy to develop and teach a course in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association. Her passion for improving the education system has been resounding for the nearly three decades she has dedicated to Math Solutions.

Prior to joining Math Solutions, Marji worked as a middle school mathematics teacher for North East Independent School District (NEISD) in San Antonio, Texas. Marji's commitment to education earned her the title of Middle School Teacher of the Year and Teacher of the Year in 1985 at NEISD. She is also the recipient of the Texas State Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematical Teaching. Marji is the author of Creative Graphing (ETA/Cuisenaire, 1986) and she coauthored the book Number Power: A Cooperative Approach to Mathematics and Social Development (Addison-Wesley, 1992).

Marji holds a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as an Associate of Arts degree from Laredo Junior College.


MGould

Mike Gould

Mike Gould has provided K–12 professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams and teachers across the country for 30 years. Mike began his career teaching junior high and senior high school mathematics. As the Roseburg, Oregon District Math Specialist, he worked directly with the Oregon Department of Education designing state-wide open-ended assessment tasks and was the lead trainer for scoring student work.

Mike received The Oscar Schaaf Secondary Mathematics Education Award for years of service in the area of improving mathematics education in Oregon. Mike has been a board member of the Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the State Representative for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and is a member of the Professional Development Service Committee for NCTM.

Mike graduated with honors from California State University of Chico with a BS in Mathematics. He has completed graduate work in mathematics at the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and The Ohio State University.


LGray

Le'Vada Gray

Le'Vada Gray joined Math Solutions in 2010 and is now a Professional Development Consultant on the professional development team. In her role, she designs and provides professional development in K–8th grades, site-based coaching, and e-coaching to classroom teachers, district-level administrators, and school-based math leadership teams across the country. Le'Vada has facilitated courses for middle school teachers in the Northside Independent School District of San Antonio, TX, Toledo, OH; and Canton/Woodstock, GA since joining the organization. She brings six years of elementary school teaching experience and one year as a school site administrator in public and charter schools in Los Angeles.

In conjunction with her classroom teaching, Le'Vada worked as a professional development provider and site-based coach for the Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (CCRTL). She designed and facilitated professional development in culturally responsive pedagogy in mathematics for school districts in Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, CA; St. Louis, MO; and Asbury Park, NJ, to name a few.

Le'Vada holds both California administrative and teaching credentials after completing additional coursework in educational administration at National University in Los Angeles and elementary education at Mills College in Oakland. She received her bachelor of science in journalism at Northwestern University.


AMayfield

Amy Mayfield

Amy Mayfield is currently the Development Manager, Math Professional Development (South Central). She designs and provides K–8 professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, and teachers across the country. Amy has facilitated partnership projects with schools in Atlanta, Georgia; Judson Independent School District schools in San Antonio, Texas; math coaches in Highland Heights, Kentucky; and Ysleta Independent School District teachers in El Paso, Texas, to name a few. She has worked with primary teachers on investigations and lessons that will help students strengthen their algebraic thinking and reinforce their arithmetic skills.

Prior to her work with Math Solutions, Amy taught elementary school for seven years in San Antonio. Amy has a bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies from Texas A&M University. Amy lives in San Antonio.

Mary Mitchell

Mary Mitchell designs and provides K–8 professional development for district-level administrators, schoolbased math leadership teams and teachers across the country. Her main priority is the students and teachers that she serves. Mary strongly believes in customizable and research-based solutions for school districts.

Mary is a National Board Certified Teacher and has taught in the elementary classroom for over eight years. Mary was the District Elementary Math Specialist and a Math Coach for the Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati, Ohio. She planned and implemented professional development across the district in order to deepen teacher content knowledge and support effective instructional practices.

Mary holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Northern Kentucky University and a Master of Teaching from Marygrove College.

Diane Reynolds

Diane Reynolds joined the Math Solutions Professional Development team after serving 29 years in public education in North Texas. Diane's passion for mathematics and student learning has driven her to be a lifelong learner and to practice that learning. Commitment to improving quality math instruction is a priority and she believes that occurs best through customized professional learning designed to meet the needs of students and staff. She works with districts to design and deliver professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, Math Coaches, and teachers across the country.

Diane earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, with a Kindergarten endorsement, from North Texas State University and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, with a Supervisor Certification, from East Texas State University. She has also completed post graduate work in the field of gifted & talented education. With 23 years of experience in Mesquite ISD, Diane was awarded the district’s Apple Corps Award recognizing outstanding classroom teachers. She taught a variety of grades K–6, as well as other experiences and positions including GT Facilitator, Math Facilitator, and mentoring student teachers. Diane’s greatest award to date is that she will become a grandmother for the first time in June 2013.

Nickie Rizzo

Nickie Rizzo is the Associate Director of Recruiting and Consultant Professional Development. Nickie joined Math Solutions in 2000, and has facilitated partnership projects with Buffalo Public Schools in New York; San Diego City Schools in California; East Baton Rouge schools in Louisiana; and New York City Region 10, to name a few.

In her current role, Nickie facilitates on-going learning opportunities for the group of Math Solutions consultants, while recruiting new consultants for this ever-expanding team of experts.

Previously, Nickie worked for more than 19 years in the North East Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas, as both a Math Instructional Specialist and a classroom teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Lisa Rogers

Lisa Rogers provides guidance, support, and professional development to K–8 mathematics teachers, coaches, school-based math leadership teams, and administrators as they implement new instructional strategies and curricula. She collaborates with district and school hosts to align support with resources, standards, assessments, and instructional improvement plans. Most recently, Lisa has managed partnership projects with Community District 6 in New York City; math coaches in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana; teachers in Dayton, Ohio; and schools in Landover, Maryland.

Lisa brings to her work more than nine years of experience as a mathematics educator in Indianapolis Public Schools in Indiana and Lee County Public Schools in Fort Myers, Florida.

She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Ball State University and is a frequent speaker and presenter at national conferences. Lisa was named the 2001–2002 Math Teacher of the Year in the Lee County School District, Florida.

Genni Steele's dedication to improved practices in education shines in her management of the Math Solutions team which provides high-quality professional development tailored to meet the demands of new educational practices. When working with clients, she determines their needs and helps them develop plans for professional development to provide a rich and engaging learning experience.

Genni is a veteran teacher with over 20 years of experience teaching mathematics, and was the Middle School Curriculum Leader in Mathematics in White Bear Lake, MN. There, Genni helped coordinate the implementation of integrated mathematics curriculum and developed and implemented annual focus for middle school mathematics. Genni frequently presents at national, regional, and local educational conferences.

Genni received her bachelor's of Science in Mathematics and Physical Education from Mankato State University. She later earned her master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Mathematics Education from the University of Minnesota. She is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Development Manager Lu Ann Weynand came to Math Solutions in 2005. She designs and provides K–8 professional development for district-level administrators, school-based math leadership teams, and teachers across the country.

Lu Ann has facilitated partnership projects with grades 6–8 teachers in Savannah, Georgia; teacher leaders from Clear Creek Independent School District in League City, Texas; middle school teachers in Newport News, Virginia; and teacher leaders from Syracuse, New York.

Lu Ann brought with her nearly 30 years of educational experience as an elementary and middle school teacher in the San Antonio, Texas, area. In 2004, she received the NEISD School Board Recognition Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education.

Lu Ann holds a master of science degree in school administration from Texas A&I University and a bachelor of science degree in education from Southwest Texas State University.

Sheila Yates

Professional Development Specialist

Sheila Yates is currently a Professional Development Specialist for Math Solutions and provides professional development across the country for teachers and district-level administrators. One of her current projects in East Cleveland involves her in coaching teachers at the elementary schools and in the middle schools.

Her involvement with education includes being a teacher, math curriculum specialist in public education, and a testing coordinator at the state department. She is known for her district-level work in aligning math curriculum and mentoring teachers in professional development. She has served as a math and literacy coach and educational consultant in private and public schools across the country.

Sheila holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Math Education from Metropolitan State College of Colorado, a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Pedagogy with an emphasis in Math from University of Colorado at Denver and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix. She lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
