About Teaching Mathematics IAbout Teaching Mathematics I helps districts meet two key goals: changing the way teachers think about math and changing how they teach math to their students. Using your district’s math standards and a structure that supports participants as learners and as teachers, this mathematics institute offers the rationale and guidance for teaching mathematics through problem solving. While deepening their own content knowledge, teachers learn how to develop students’ abilities to think and reason; build students’ number sense, computation, and problem-solving skills; and organize instruction for whole-class, small-group, and individual learning. Course instructors with extensive classroom experience address specific grade-level needs. Grades K–8.
Resource Materials: About Teaching Mathematics: A K–8 Resource, Third Edition plus a collection of various course readings.
About Teaching Mathematics I and II, designed for grades K–8, focus on core topics appropriate for all grade levels. Middle school content such as algebra and proportional reasoning are also a focus.
About Teaching Mathematics IIBuilding on experiences from the introductory course, About Teaching Mathematics II helps teachers examine their classroom implementation, refine their teaching practice, and learn more mathematics. Activities throughout the week address all strands of the mathematics curriculum, with an emphasis on measurement and geometry. Special attention is given to connecting classroom assessment to instruction. Grades K–8.

Teaching Math Through Problem SolvingProblem solving is an integral part of math learning and teaching. This course provides teachers firsthand experience with learning mathematics through problem solving. Participants are introduced to approaches and strategies they can use to help students build new mathematical knowledge. They learn about providing students with many and varied problems and about promoting students’ use of a range of problem-solving strategies. Throughout the course, teachers experience and learn how to provide a classroom environment that encourages students to explore, take risks, and share their thinking. Grades K–8.

So You're New to Teaching Math?Support first-time teachers and teachers new to teaching math with the practical help and direction they need to teach mathematics well. The journey to becoming an effective teacher of math is filled with questions—What’s the best way to get a handle on all the math I need to teach during the year? What’s important for me to think about when planning lessons? How do I establish a classroom atmosphere that encourages students to learn math?
Instructors with years of experience in working with students and providing in-classroom support for teachers help participants develop their expertise and a personal teaching style that also fits the specific requirements and programs in your district. Grades K–8.

Understanding the Math You TeachStudents’ understanding of and facility with the concepts and skills in number and operations are key to their future mathematical success. And success depends on instruction guided by a teacher who is both confident and competent with math content. This course, designed to address district-determined grade levels, helps teachers deepen their content knowledge in the number and operations strand. Teachers’ experiences and back-at-school assignments help them focus and refine their instruction to build students’ understanding, number sense, accurate and efficient computation, and problem-solving skills. Grades K–8.

Teaching Math in the Primary, Intermediate, or Middle School GradesTeaching math through problem solving remains new for many educators. That approach comes alive in this course as teachers investigate classroom lessons that give concrete examples of what it means to engage students in understanding, reasoning, and problem solving. With each experience, participants examine the strategies used to promote understanding and reasoning—small-group learning, manipulative use, teacher questioning, and classroom discussions. Grades 1–3, 3–6, or 6–8.

Minilessons for Math PracticeProviding meaningful math practice is essential for strengthening students’ math skills. This course offers an approach to practice involving short lessons that are easy to implement, with structures and routines that can be used again and again to provide the reinforcement students need. Teacher facilitated and highly interactive, the lessons help students practice math concepts, skills, and processes by applying them in a variety of problem-solving contexts. Grades K–5.

Teaching Mathematics with ManipulativesThis course shows teachers how to incorporate manipulative materials—for example color tiles, geoboards, pattern blocks, Cuisenaire® Rods, and Snap Cubes®—into their mathematics instruction. Many teachers are supplied with manipulative materials but have not had the opportunity to explore their potential for teaching mathematics. Focusing on specific manipulative materials requested by the host district, this course introduces participants to the benefits of manipulatives and demonstrates how to use them to support students’ math learning. Grades K–8.
Resource Materials: Supplementary resources are chosen based on course content and district needs.
Developing Number SenseNumber sense is a broad idea that covers a range of numerical thinking. This course helps teachers gain an understanding of what number sense is, why it’s important, and what strategies they can use to strengthen their students’ number sense. Through firsthand experiences, teachers explore their own number sense and are introduced to instructional approaches that promote thinking and communicating about number. Samples of student work help connect course investigations to teachers’ classroom needs. Grades K–6.
