Principals—Instructional Leaders for MathLeading instructional change requires that principals understand the demands of current math standards and assessment programs. They must also have a clear vision of classroom instruction that increases students’ learning.
Working in partnership with district leaders, we design professional development that helps principals understand the issues underlying current standards for math instruction; learn what to look for during classroom observations of mathematics teaching; and work with teacher leaders or math coaches to support math instruction in the school. A lesson with students is a key and compelling feature of this professional development.

Helping Teacher Leaders Improve Instruction
Supporting School-Based Change, School-Based Math Leadership Teams, and Grade-Level Math Leadership Teams Often districts enlist the help of key classroom teachers to take on math leadership responsibilities in addition to their daily classroom instruction. Working with a district’s math improvement plan, Math Solutions designs courses to help teacher leaders collaborate with their school principal and/or school math team to create, implement, and evaluate a clearly defined action plan for improving math instruction in their school. In addition to participating in courses, teacher leaders complete back-at-school assignments to build their skills in working with students, other teachers, and their principal.
Note: We can provide criteria for selecting teacher leaders and determining the leadership structure that best suits your district’s needs.

Principals and Math Coaches Working TogetherMany districts are turning to math coaches as a strategy for supporting teachers and improving mathematics instruction. While the role of a math coach may vary at both the district and the school level, a clearly defined partnership between principals and coaches is the cornerstone for successful classroom coaching. Through this course, principals and math coaches engage in experiences that help define expectations for a vital partnership and establish protocols to help them plan for and encourage instructional improvement in their schools.

Helping Math Coaches Effect ChangeA math coach can significantly influence a school’s mathematics program. The coaching role is a complex one that requires ongoing development of content and instructional expertise. Through course experiences, coaches develop skills to lead and support effective math instruction in their schools. Depending on the district-defined role for coaches and their experience, courses are designed to meet coaches’ need for knowledge of math content and best practices for mathematics instruction. Coaches also develop their ability to strengthen teachers’ instruction through strategies such as lesson planning, collaborative teaching, observations, and collegial conversations.
