Teaching ArithmeticNumber and operations, or arithmetic, is at the heart of elementary school mathematics. Based on a collection of Math Solutions resources, Teaching Arithmetic provides the support teachers need to help their students develop three important aspects of arithmetic: computation, number sense, and problem solving. Teaching MeasurementMeasurement is important in the mathematics curriculum because of its practicality and pervasiveness in so many aspects of everyday life. As students measure in different contexts, they develop understanding of important ideas about measurement as well as mathematical concepts from other strands of the curriculum, especially number and geometry. This course engages participants in deepening their own understanding of what it means to measure. Activities provide teachers the basis for planning and facilitating instruction that supports students in learning to make appropriate decisions about measurement, units, and tools. Grades K–8.

Teaching Money Concepts in the Primary GradesThe topic of money is basic to the mathematics curriculum for primary students—and it is a topic in which children’s experiences vary widely. Many teachers look for ways to help children learn about our monetary system. During this course, teachers explore a variety of games and activities that engage students in identifying coins and their values, counting money, and applying their learning to problem-solving situations. While money is the focus, teachers will also find support for helping children develop number sense and the ability to count and compute. Grades 1–2.

Building a Foundation for AlgebraThis mathematics institute helps teachers strengthen their understanding of critical algebraic concepts. Building on the instruction they already provide in arithmetic, participants learn through hands-on investigations how to teach algebraic skills related to patterns, equivalence, variables, multiple representations, equations, graphing, and functions. Teachers learn algebraic content essential to elementary and middle school mathematics instruction. Grades K–8.

Teaching Algebraic ThinkingIntroductory experiences are helpful for teachers who are new to incorporating algebraic thinking into their mathematics instruction. This course engages teachers in a variety of classroom lessons and investigations that bring meaning to key ideas of algebraic thinking such as patterns and functions, variables, and graphing of functions. Grades K–8.

Teaching a Geometry UnitThis course presents a standards-based geometry unit and helps teachers understand why geometry is an important topic in the elementary mathematics curriculum. The course engages teachers in hands-on investigations of two-dimensional shapes and their properties and introduces activities that build spatial understanding. Participants learn how to introduce geometry terminology in the context of problem-solving lessons and how to help students explore relationships between and among shapes. Samples of student work connect experiences to classroom instruction. Grades 1–4.

Teaching a Probability UnitProbability is one area of the curriculum that teachers often feel unprepared to teach. This course demystifies probability and gives teachers practical activities for helping their students learn important probability concepts, including determining the likelihood of events, establishing sample size, and making predictions from samples. The standards-based unit presents lessons involving games, experiments, and investigations that engage students in predicting outcomes and testing their predictions. Samples of student work connect the experiences to classroom instruction. Grades 1–4.
