Create internal professional development tools that demonstrate effective instructional strategies. Record Math Solutions master teachers in action—in your own classrooms.
For example, view the video segments created in collaboration with Richland County School District One to provide the district with internal resources for continuous coaching and professional development.
In September 2009, Richland County School District One (Richland One) in Columbia, South Carolina, asked Math Solutions to collaborate in the development of video resources that could be used for continuous, districtwide coaching and professional development to support the district's upper elementary educators. The goal of this project was to create an internal professional development tool that would:
Provide teachers with an exemplar of instruction focused on the effective use of manipulatives to develop algebraic thinking.
Create a context for teachers to dialogue about instruction.
Provide teachers with models of effective, standards-based instruction.
Increase both student and teacher content knowledge.
Math Solutions assisted in the selection of state standards to be addressed. Based on a careful evaluation of student performance data and needs related to teacher content knowledge, algebra was selected as the focus for instruction. The lessons include several standards related to algebra. See the lesson plan to view the standards addressed in the video segments.
