Review Guide

The following review guide was created by Math Solutions to assist teachers in Richland One in implementing the teaching strategies demonstrated in the video segments.

Viewing and Reflecting on the Video Lesson

The following suggestions will help teachers try out the lesson back in their classrooms and reflect on the potential support for learning that using manipulatives can provide students:

  • Provide teachers with a copy of the article “How to Make the Most of Math Manipulatives” by Marilyn Burns, which appeared in the April 1996 issue of Instructor magazine. The article has several parts:

    • 7 Musts for Using Manipulatives
    • A Letter to Parents
    • Answers to Your Questions
    • How I Introduced the Geoboard in My Classroom
    • Pattern Block Activities
  • Offer teachers the following reading guidelines:

As you read the article, highlight passages that you want to remember. In addition, use the following questions to focus your reading:
    • What do I already know about the ideas and information in this article?
    • What ideas are new to me? How do they build on what I already know?
    • Based on my own experiences, what ideas and information would I add?
  • Have teachers use the video segments as the basis for planning and teaching the same or a similar lesson in their classroom. Ideally, teachers would meet as a grade level to plan the lesson and meet again after they taught the lesson to debrief. Debriefing questions might include:
    • What aspects of the lesson were successful?
    • What was challenging?
    • Did students meet the math goals? How do you know?
    • What did you learn from teaching the lesson?
    • How did the lesson compare and contrast with the lesson on the video?
    • What changes would you make if you were to teach the lesson again?
    • What questions do you have as a result of teaching the lesson?>
