Reaching Your Common Core Objectives:
A shift in the "what" AND the "how" of teaching math

We know from a wide body of research that initiating and sustaining meaningful change in instruction and student achievement requires involvement at every level of the district, from the superintendent to each teacher in the classroom. Moreover, to be truly effective, professional learning must be part of a larger, long range improvement strategy, and integral to the school culture.

At Math Solutions, we've been transforming instruction for almost 30 years. Now the same strategies and methods we use for developing student proficiency are embodied in the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Math Solutions can support your adoption with:

Transition Consulting

We work with you to analyze your data, identifying gaps and areas of need. We then guide and support the collaborative development of a strategic plan with clearly defined milestones and metrics for a successful transition.

Common Core Courses

Getting Started:
Leadership Course:
This full-day course provides leaders with insight into the structure and pedagogy of the Mathematical Practices and a vision for classroom implementation including observing a model lesson demonstrating "best practice" strategies.

Quick Start Series™:
Math Solutions Common Core Quick Start Series introduces educators to the central ideas embodied in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. We align what educators already know with what they need to learn about developing expertise in the "processes and proficiencies" outlined in the practices. Participants will leave each course with instructional skills and strategies they can use in their classrooms immediately.
Course 1: Making Sense of Math A Focus on Reasoning and Discourse
Course 2: Mathematical Thinking A Focus on Representation
and Procedural Fluency
Course 3: Problem Solving Developing Disposition, Competence,
and Confidence

Deepen Understanding:
Unpacking Common Core Content—Priority Standards:
Build grade-level understanding of priority domains and plan effective instruction that meets the level of rigor called for in the Common Core. In this multi-day course, we unpack the Common Core content and integrate the Mathematical Practices in an engaging and relevant hands-on exploration of the mathematics standards.
• Mathematics Number and Operations, Grades K–2
• Operations and Fractions, Grades 3–6
• Ratios and Proportional Thinking, Grades 6–8

Differentiating Common Core Mathematics Instruction:
This course helps teachers understand what it means to support all students by differentiating three aspects of the math curriculum—content, process, and product. Teachers examine a variety of approaches that help them make instructional adjustments to content, provide activities that address how different students learn, and offer a variety of ways for students to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

Multi-Day Institute—About Teaching the Common Core:
Fundamentally change the way your teachers think about math and how they teach their students. In this relevant and engaging institute—customized for your schools and district—teachers deepen their own content knowledge while learning how to develop students’ abilities to think and reason.

Maximize Formative Assessment:

MRI, a free, online formative assessment tool developed by Marilyn Burns and a team of Math Solutions master teachers, focuses on middle school students’ understanding of whole number, fractions, and decimals—key areas related to preparing for algebra.

MRI for School and District Leaders:
Find out what your students really understand about math and learn how to support instruction that develops numerical reasoning.

MRI in the Common Core Classroom:
Establish a solid foundation of MRI’s theory, structure and focus while developing strategies that target understanding and reasoning.

School–Based Coaching & Online Support: Theory into Practice

Designed to deepen and sustain professional learning, our coaching and online support help teachers at all levels of experience move beyond the theoretical to take the Mathematical Practices into the classroom. We work with your leadership team to create a uniquely customized plan.

Group Coaching: The fastest way to synchronize your team, to share experience and expertise, and to collaborate on plans and protocols.

Side-By-Side, Job-Embedded Coaching: Truly differentiates the experience for your teachers, allowing information to be immediately integrated into the teaching process.

ePD: Coaching, Webinars, Videos and Ask Me Now Virtual Office hours. Maximize your budget and teachers’ time in the classroom.

Math Solutions consulting, courses, and coaching are offered on-site at your school or in your district based on a schedule convenient for you and your team. Our all-inclusive pricing starts at $3,800/day for most courses and $3,100/day for coaching.

Common Core Resources

Our Common Core courses, consulting and coaching incorporate the latest academic research, the methods developed by Marilyn Burns through extensive in-classroom research and the most innovative strategies and "best practices" from our vast library of publications and award-winning authors.

Math Solutions Resources

Central to the Common Core are the Standards for Mathematical Practice. These practices reflect the most advanced and innovative thinking on how all students should interact with math content to master essential skills and their underlying concepts.

The standards call upon students to speculate, reason, defend and debate their thinking, and to solve problems in more than one way. They are also expected to connect math to everyday problems, using it to simplify complex situations.

In doing this, they should be able to symbolical represent problems—understanding the underlying meaning not just how to apply the formula. And finally, they should look for patterns and shortcuts while strategically selecting tools to help them with problem solving.

"Explain It to Me" Videos.

Learning Outcomes

At Math Solutions, we've been transforming instruction for almost 30 years. Now the same strategies and methods we use for developing student proficiency are embodied in the Standards for Mathematical Practice

CCSS—Standards for Mathematical Practice Learning Outcomes with Math Solutions
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Students understand what they are being asked and consider multiple strategies and tools to analyze and solve problems.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively Students use mathematics in the abstract and are able to symbolically represent quantities and their relationships— understanding the underlying meaning, not just how to compute.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Individually or in groups, students articulate and defend their ideas and analyze the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics Students apply the mathematics they know to solve problems using tools such as diagrams, tables, graphs, and formulas to represent and analyze relationships and draw conclusions.
Use appropriate tools strategically Students consider available tools— including concrete models and technology—and use them strategically to solve mathematical problems.
Attend to precision Students are precise in their mathematical communication, use of terminology, and are careful about expressing numerical answers with a degree of precision appropriate for the problem context.
Look for and make use of structure Students look for and make use of pattern and structure in learning mathematics and solving problems.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Students notice repetitions in calculations and look for general methods and for shortcuts.

What's Working

“I just wanted to thank you and our district for providing me with an incredible week! In 35 years I have never attended an inservice comparable to this one. There wasn’t a moment during the week when I wasn’t learning something new, either in content or methodology, and the “ah ha” moments never stopped. The instructors were wonderful models for us—competent, knowledgeable, fabulous presenters, and extremely personable. I am eager to share these experiences with the Sunland staff.”
